Gear-Up’s “Feed the Pig” campaign

We all know the story “This Little Piggy.” Well, little pigs as we know them today have evolved. This little piggy wants to go to college. He’s not going wait around and then go to market. He is “Gear-Up Pig” collecting money for the West Union High School scholarship fund.

The drive has been promoted in Mr. Bihl’s eighth grade social studies classes, and has become known as the “Feed the Pig” campaign. To kick off the campaign, the pig was presented on his own platform with a backdrop stating that “This little piggy wants to go to college.” A callout says “Feed the pig.” Orally, it resonates in a low, deep voice with a slow drawl. The students have deposited their loose change to feed the pig.
It was then decided that the pig should have a name. The students were asked to submit their name choices for the pig. The names were compiled into a list and placed on a ballot. All the 8th grade students voted for their favor name. The name selected has become Gear-Up Pig’s alter ego, Spider Pig (“Spidey”).
Spidey wants to go to college
because he realizes the importance of education. So, when he not off saving the
world from evil forces, he reverts back to Gear-Up Pig and makes college
visits. Dressed in his favorite jersey and ball cap he visited the University
of Michigan.

Each junior high classroom is decorated to represent various colleges/universities in and round Ohio. This is a project to help students gain an interest in higher education by looking at what is offered at the school. Students can also see what they must do during their high school career to be accepted into their college of choice.
GearUp Pig needs friends, and to promote the GearUp scholarship effort, students have been asked to dress their own GearUp pig. The “best dressed” pig will be selected by the WUHS students with a penny vote. The “girl pig” receiving the most money will be named GearUp Pig’s (Spidey’s) girlfriend.
